The u-boot is not bash see http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Bootloader_commands
I think it comes with busybox but you cannot set u-boot enviroment variables
from linux this way.

if you wish to set them from linux you sould look at uboot-envedit from debian
fso-utils, and http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Flashing_the_Neo_FreeRunner
under "Alternative: using nandwrite"
