Took me longer then expected to come back to this...

The libusb-1.0 branch works now with my freerunner and the other
devices I have. The problem was related to the fact that the
freerunner starts in runtime mode and I had introduced a bug in this
part.

I guess your device is already in DFU mode if you start dfu-util?

There is still one problem I do not fully understand which hold me
back merging the code into the master branch yet. It seems to be
related to what you are seeing and trying to address with your patch.
