I replaced L1704 with a TDK VLF3012AT @ 2.2uH (data sheet:
http://www.tdk.co.jp/tefe02/e531_vlf3012a.pdf) and repeated the
experiments.  With this new part the efficiency of the conversion
jumped to 80%  :-)
