I saved your conf under org.openembedded.dev/conf/machine/fic-gta01.conf
and changed my local.conf to use MACHINE = "fic-gta01".

I don't currently NEED to build the kernel, but I figured that I'd give
it a try to build a gpe-image & figure out how bitbake picks up a
kernel.  Since there there aren't any gta01-kernel*.bb files in
org.openembedded.dev/packages/linux/ yet, I suppose it would be better
to just pick an existing kernel close to 2.6.17.14...and I think I just
figured out the answer to my previous question.

The ep93xx also is an arm machine conf that includes tune-arm920t.conf
&& currently happens to be using the 2.6.17 kernel.
