Able to initiate call with libgsmd-too, but not with dialer

Hello,

I'm having trouble placing a call with the dialer. I guess I should ask first
whether this should be possible: Is the dialer working?

I am able to dial out using cu and libgsmd-tool.libgsmd-toollibgsmd-tool, but
not with the dialer application.

Perhaps related, the dialer does not seem to come up consistently. If I invoke
it by pressing the icon in the "Home" position, nothing happens except for an
occasional flash. If I invoke it by running "/usr/bin/openmoko-dialer" from a
shell, the application sometimes comes up, sometimes doesn't. A large number
of debug messages are displayed.

Now if the dialer is known not to work, what is the required manual steps to
take, to place an outgoing call?
