I don't think it would be too heavy. There's already an effort to get 
Pidgin running under Maemo. Pidgin itself would be difficult, but a new 
UI based on libpurple is entirely reasonable.

I'd be happy to help out as time permits (this was something I was 
considering working on anyways).
