Yes I understood it, but then I said to myself we do all that work on a
new project, and in the end we only supported block access which is not
very useful over the network (NBD clients are thin on the ground).

Access over a network link of some kind is more complete solution: then
the immediate issue is NetworkManager providing good easy nailed up
connections.  It doesn't damage the idea but it just means if
NetworkManager wasn't already very important for us, it really is if we
go with one slot since it seems good usability of it is dependent on NM.
