It's basically the "software" power-off you have in your normal cell
phone. U1705 is more like pulling the battery. (With the exception of
the RF amplifier, where we have to trust the (unpowered) GSM baseband
processor to keep it down.)

YES ! Just think how many _seconds_ it would have taken to find those
base resistors for the LEDs, and compare this to the amount of work
this silly mistake cost us in the end.
