How do modules get broken? Is it because of packaging, that the
modules are separate from the kernel?

I was, but I switched to sshfs after realizing how much easier it is
to set up. (I like to be able to use a graphical editor on my PC to
edit Scheme source files on the Neo, then I can test right away from
another ssh session.) Either way, usbnet (or something like it) has
to work, or it becomes difficult to fix things when they're broken.
(I have a GTA01 so no wifi.)
