Yeah, I wonder if it's really worth the trouble to maintain binary
compatibility. This decision predates my involvement in OpenMoko,
but perhaps Harald or Mickey can explain.

As far as I am concerned, I very much want binary compatibility
within the same development line, i.e., that a kernel for GTA02
runs on all GTA02 revisions. (We didn't have this with u-boot, and
it's always been a pain.)

I don't see much value for myself in binary kernel compatibility
between GTA01 and GTA02. I don't expect to switch between models
often enough that a rebuild with a different defconfig or parallel
build trees would really be much of an issue.

Also, separate defconfigs would allow us to omit unused drivers,
yielding somewhat smaller kernels. Unless things get radically
different, I would probably want to generate such defconfigs from
a common "master" with device-independent settings, though.

I think the GSM suspend you mean is in fact the same change, only a
different problem it causes.
