why does not the kernel build script work?

The GTA02 directory?

You should use the procedure in the "kernel" wiki page to build the
kernel. Perhaps the instructions on the second page should be replaced
by a link to the "kernel" page. From what I've been reading in the
lists it seems that the building procedure might change in the near
future.
