it's pretty bad with O2 in the UK, but since i started doing an 
"AT%SLEEP=2" after each reboot, the "losing registration while awake" has 
gone away and the 'phone has been much more responsive at waking up for 
incoming calls.

that said, i only started doing it yesterday; time may have more to tell.
