So no one has any ideas? 

I read somewhere that the 'echo' problem was fixed in 4.3, but came back
in version 4.4. Is there any hope of a fix in 4.4.2? Actually these
sound problems are the only reason for me to keep my old phone, so I am
really looking forward to see this problem go away :-)
