Running python programs under Qtopia

Under Qtopia (as in, framebuffer, not X11), what can I use from python
programs for output and input? I've looked at curses, pygame, and PyQt.
Curses works from the terminal (and I guess would probably work in other
contexts if I stopped qpe). Pygame fails to initialize the display. PyQt
looks like it requires X11?
