If you want to minimally modify the package
'linux-image-2.6.24-openmoko-gta02' I suggest the following:

1) apt-get source linux-image-2.6.24-openmoko-gta02
2) modify linux-2.6-openmoko-20081103.git7172ec57/defconfig-gta02 by hand or with menuconfig
3) sudo apt-get build-dep linux-image-2.6.24-openmoko-gta02
4) fakeroot apt-get --build source linux-image-2.6.24-openmoko-gta02
5) sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.24-openmoko-gta02*.deb

If you want to help in kernel development I would recommend you get
andy-tracking branch from git.openmoko.org/linux-2.6
