what makes you think reformat will remedy a space issue?
did you actually check the space avaliable (assuming "login prompt" means  
you are able to login via ssh)?
i'd assume, /var/ ... and /tmp/ are mounted tmpfs, not sd card, if that's  
true reformating the sd card wouldn't help either.
