Such "fund-raising" has worked for other OSS projects.
In one case, there was a call for sponsors and for a
programmer (to add vpn to a firewall)....but there were
enough sponsors that the original author spoke up and said,
well,  if 12 people are offering to chip in $50, I can
take time off from work to do this.
