I have the same problem with v31 and I found a simple workaround. Simply 
add any picture to the contact and then the contact will show up in the 
list of contacts. Bear in mind that the contact might not be saved on 
the SIM card, so if you switch distros you might need to add the contact 
again on a different distro.
