I just did a test on my GTA01, playing an MP3 file with 'madplay' and
simultaneously recording from the mic with "arecord -c 2 -r 44100 -f
S16_LE test.dat". I did not encounter your one-second pausing problem;
MP3 playback was not affected by the recording[1], and when I later
played back the recorded file it sounded fine.

I am using a custom mixer state file, but I am not aware of anything in
there that would cause the problem you described. I haven't worked with
pulseaudio so I can't really help with that part of it.

[1] Not affected while it was recording; as soon as I stopped 'arecord'
the pitch of the MP3 playback changed, so there is a bug somewhere.
